Antique Swedish "allmoge" Birch Wood Box 19´th Century Picture(s) and Description:

Birch wood was often used in scandinavia because its strong and dont crack that easy as many other wood materials. Birch is a very common tree in scandinavia and grows just around the corner. During the wintertime when the work on the farm was slow the people used their time to produce different things needed the rest of the year and other things that where to be sold on the spring fair to get some extra cash. This lovely box in bent birch wood is signed at the bottom with the initials of the owners ( there are several). The model is normally seen much smaller but this is rather big. You should look extra on how its stitched together with roots thats been stripped and treated to become soft. Its made in the first quarter of the 19th century and most likely from the south of Sweden. A lovely and very rare piece. Many of these has been thrown away over the years. There is a small ding on the side and the stitching has become a little worn but it holds together perfectly and opens and closes easily. Note that there are no nails in this at all. The plugs are made of wood. (nails was expensive) The size is 19xm x 12 cm and its 9 cm tall. The weight is 360 gram.
