Napoleon Style Tantalus Decanter Glass Box Picture(s) and Description:

Napoleon

I found this gorgeous wooden box at an estate sale in Little Rock, Arkansas, but had no idea what it's purpose was. I searched and searched, and then one day I found a box almost identical to it on ebay and discovered it was a tantalus--a wooden box that could be locked and was used for storing glass decanters. This is the neatest box--and as you can see from the pictures it is obviously very old. It is by no means in perfect shape--the pictures tell the story so look closely at them as this box is sold as is. The top of the box has a small brass plate. The inside holds 6 small glasses on bottom and 4 large decanters--and the top holds 8 glasses. The tray comes completely out and has a gilt handle with gilt dividers as you can see in picture #4. It is in good condition. There is a lock on the front of the box and I'm sure you could find a key at a locksmith shop. The box is black with brass trim. Some of the brass inlay is gone and some is coming loose--just needs to be glued back down--but I'll let the winner do that himself. The top of the box opens up and folds back down on itself, and both sides swing open for a gorgeous presentation. The box could use a few minor repairs, but I think it is a beautiful display piece as is, or I would even use it for a decanter holder when I had company. If you have additional questions, please ask--I'll try to answer them as soon as possible. If you have any more information to add about this box--please let me know. I took this to an antique store and everyone thought it was really fabulous and totally different. It would be a great conversation piece!!
