Shes right, of course. I just dont like to admit it.

I was typing up something last night when I heard noises from the attic. I knew it was my dear spouse, She Who Must Be Obeyed, up there snooping around for something to sell. Sure enough, about fifteen minutes later, here she came carrying this old candle box Ive had stashed away for who knows how long.

Here, she said, sell this. She handed me my candle box and stood there with her hands on her hips akimbo, I think you call it. I didnt make a peep. I just set it on a little shelf behind my poor ole swivel chair and kept on typing. (I knew she was still standing there.)

Well? . . . Youre going to have to sell something great if youre going to take me on that vacation youve been promising me they got Reagan out of office. She was right about that so I decided (of my own free will) to sell it. Youre going to love it. It likely dates to the first quarter, 19th Century. Lets say 1830 to be safe.

This hanging candle box has the finest patina Ive ever run across, and it is in extraordinary condition. I doubt youll ever see a finer example.

It is 8 tall and 10 wide. The box part measures 4 deep by 4 tall.

Im sure you noticed the double headed eagle on the lid. Well, there are facing lions on the front. Those open up lots of possibilities as far as heraldry is concerned. The double headed eagle symbol was first used, as far as I know, by the Holy Roman Empire, but I think we can rule that out in this case. The box is likely either English or possibly German/Prussian, someplace like that.

Just wait til you see the detailed work on the ends. Hang on a second. Ill show you pictures.

First: I never, under any circumstances, use a reserve, and everything starts at $9, sometimes even less. And, I never end auctions early or use BIN.

Second: I don't clean, repair, or otherwise monkey around with anything. I push enough dust aside to note any flaws, but if I discovered it in some dusty attic, you can look forward to a little dust on it when it gets to your house. If it has a flaw or a wart, I'll tell you about it.

So rest easy and have some fun. Why not place a little tiny bid right now so's you don't forget about it later.

When she carried it down, it still had the faded old sticker on there from old man Johnsons sale. I remember the day I bought it. (He lived over in Indiana.)

In case youre curious about what youve been seeing in the background of the pictures . . . there it is. Its a big old Chinese root table. Ill be listing it on eBay just as soon as I figure out how to ship it. It has to be moved soon. Ill need the room for firewood. Its on my front porch.

Even the inside is in great condition, and so is the bottom.

I absolutely guarantee youll love it. Ive enjoyed it just knowing it was up there.

Are you interested in fine old books? I have just purchased a portion of the library from the estate of Moses Mielziner, President of Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati around 1900. Some are rare many are leather bound all are fun. Check back often. Ill try to list them as quickly as possible.
