Stunning Japanese Cloisonne Box Meiji Birds Mount Fuji Picture(s) and Description:
Such a lovely thing! For your consideration and from my personal collection. A absolutely exquisite late Meiji period (1900-1910) Japanese cloisonne box in a lozenge form featuring small birds (wrens or sparrows) a lake or river, florals and what I assume is Mount Fujiyama in the background. 4 7/8" by 3 11/16" It stands approximately 2 1/4 inches tall. The lid is slightly domed. The sky is a deep navy blue and there are even what appear to be little koi fish or something else swimming in the water. The mountain is a purplish gray with snow on top. The banks or the river are green with shades of orangish tan. There are peony flowers, chrysanthemum and other trees and flowers. Most of the wires appear to be silver although some look gold. The mounts and bottom are brass and the interior liner looks to be tin. The edges of the box and lid are covered in ornate floral motifs. I tell you, this thing is amazing! Condition is excellent. There are the usual little pits in the enamel that is normal to Japanese cloisonne. The tin liner is aged and a bit uneven from use. There is the remnants of an old label or piece of tape on the bottom. Mentioned for accuracy's sake. This box is truly gorgeous! Offered with no reserve. Buyer pays shipping.
