Victorian Sterling Silver Compact Box Wallace 1880 s Picture(s) and Description:
This lovely little box was meant to hold powders or maybe snuff (it appears a bit large for that) It is marked Sterling and R.W. a Stag Head and S. This mark was adopted by Wallace in 1871. I would date this item from that period to the mid 1880's. It has a great fancy monogram that I can't make out but it takes the whole top of the lid. The box is egg shaped and rounded all over (it does not have a flat edge). The size is 6 1/2 in around by 8 3/4 in around the other end. The box is held together by a hinge that is in great working order. The only flaw is the box does have dimples (dents on the bottom and sides) I believe that this could be fixed by a competent silversmith and seem to be the result of it's rounded shape.
